When Audrey was five, she visited a United Way-supported health care clinic requiring specialty medical services for a serious eye condition. A social worker met with Audrey’s family and assessed their situation and needs. The social worker helped Audrey get in to see an ophthalmologist immediately, and worked with the specialist’s office to coordinate Audrey’s care. Thanks to support from United Way, Audrey’s doctor visits were discounted and she was able to get much-needed medication at no cost. Audrey needed ongoing care to maintain the health of her eyes and prevent future loss of vision. A caring social worker helped Audrey’s parents apply for special-needs insurance coverage so that Audrey could continue receiving quality care. Audrey’s vision is stabilized and she and her parents are thankful for the health care services that helped save her eyesight.
