UNITED WAY OF GREATER HOUSTON BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTS AMEGY BANK CEO STEVE STEPHENS AS CHAIR
HOUSTON, TX (May 13, 2024) – United Way of Greater Houston announces that Steve Stephens has been elected as chair of the organization’s Board of Trustees. Stephens, who is Chief Executive Officer of Amegy Bank, will serve a two-year term as chair, leading one of the region’s largest nonprofits in its mission to connect struggling families and individuals to possibility.
“Steve has been an outstanding volunteer leader and generous supporter of United Way of Greater Houston for many years, and we are thrilled to welcome him as chair of our Board of Trustees,” said Amanda McMillian, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston. “Steve is a true champion for United Way, generously dedicating his time and talent to support our work. His leadership shines brightly, and his skills and expertise will help empower our community’s growth through our new strategy focused on financial stability.”
Stephens started volunteering with United Way of Greater Houston in 2011 and has served on the board of trustees since 2016. In addition to serving as chair of the 2020-21 United Way Community Campaign, Stephens served on the Resource Development Committee, Board Governance and Nominating Committee, and the Executive Committee. His tireless service on behalf of the community was recognized with United Way’s 2021 Robert W. Kneebone Volunteer of the Year Award. In addition to his generous service, Stephens has been a United Way donor for more than four decades.
“It is an honor to be elected as chair of the United Way of Greater Houston Board of Trustees because I believe so strongly in the positive impact that the organization has on those who need help in creating a pathway to a better life for themselves and their families,” said Stephens. “I look forward to committing my time to this important work that transforms lives in our Houston community.”
Stephens is a founding executive of Amegy Bank, having worked there for the last 31 years and helping to grow the company to nearly $14 billion in assets with more than 75 locations statewide. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from the University of Houston and has continued to contribute to the university’s board of visitors and the Bauer College of Business board. Stephen’s volunteer service extends deep into the community as he also serves on the board of directors for Houston Methodist’s Academic Institute, and as a Greater Houston Partnership director, executive committee member, chair of the immigration committee, and member of the racial equity committee. Additionally, he serves on the board of directors of Boys & Girls Country and as a member of the Hobby Center Foundation board. He is married to Anne-Laure Stephens and together have four children.
Stephens succeeds United Way of Greater Houston leadership volunteer Willie Chiang, chairman and chief executive officer of Plains, who has served as board chair since 2022 and will continue to serve as a board member.
