Rice University Reception
A Conversation with Dr. Ruth Simmons
Rice University and Paula DesRoches graciously hosted members of the Women's Initiative at the historic Wiess President's House.
The inspiring evening featured the esteemed Dr. Ruth Simmons, a trailblazer in education and leadership, who shared insights from her
book, Up Home. The New York Times Book Review described Simmons's evocative account as a
“remarkable trajectory from Jim Crow Texas, where she was the youngest of twelve children in a sharecropping family, to the
presidencies of Smith College and Brown University shines with tenderness and dignity.”
Thank you to Paula DesRoches and to all who helped to make this wonderful evening dedicated to the work of the United Way Women’s
Initiative possible.
