Bright Beginnings

What is Bright Beginnings?

United Way Bright Beginnings, a partnership between United Way of Greater Houston and ExxonMobil, is an innovative early education program designed to help children from lower-income families achieve social, emotional, physical and cognitive milestones and enter school ready to succeed. Bright Beginnings’ hands-on curriculum and child-centered approach make a measurable difference in preparing children to start and succeed in school.

  • 22 years of helping children enter school ready to succeed.

  • 51 current Bright Beginnings centers.

  • 26 current Bright Beginnings family childcare homes.

  • 300+ Bright Beginnings teachers who have earned a Child Development Associate credential.

  • More than 15,000 children served by Bright Beginnings since inception.

  • 24,000 hours of free coaching and professional development provided to local childcare programs and families they serve.

Rappel for a Reason: Women's Initiative Team Goes Over the Edge!

This talented and spirited group of women raised over $20,000 for United Way, surpassing their Women’s Initiative fundraising goal. These brave women faced their fears and went over the edge for their neighbors and community.

Rice University Reception

A Conversation with Dr. Ruth Simmons

Rice University and Paula DesRoches graciously hosted members of the Women's Initiative at the historic Wiess President's House.

The inspiring evening featured the esteemed Dr. Ruth Simmons, a trailblazer in education and leadership, who shared insights from her book, Up Home. The New York Times Book Review described Simmons's evocative account as a “remarkable trajectory from Jim Crow Texas, where she was the youngest of twelve children in a sharecropping family, to the presidencies of Smith College and Brown University shines with tenderness and dignity.

Women's Initiative Wrap and Wine Volunteer Project

It was a fantastic evening of friendship and volunteerism as Women’s Initiative members wrapped 954 books for 300 students at 19 partner agencies for United Way Bright Beginnings program.
