Under the Data Safety Moment, UWGH will highlight cybersecurity, privacy, or data security related topics to support the safe and secure use of the ICJ Tech Tool. |
As the year winds down, the excitement of the holiday season takes center stage. Many of us are reconnecting with family and friends, taking much-needed breaks from work, traveling, and indulging in thoughtful gifts for ourselves and loved ones. However, amidst the celebrations, it's essential to stay vigilant about cybersecurity—especially as new devices can inadvertently increase our vulnerability to cyberattacks. This month's Data Safety Moment focuses on safeguarding against Bluetooth-based threats. |
According to the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Understanding Bluetooth Technology, Bluetooth is a short-range radio frequency technology that enables devices to communicate wirelessly. It plays a significant role in both our personal and professional lives, powering everything from headphones and fitness trackers to workplace devices. While Bluetooth technology often incorporates Digital Signatures and Encryption to enhance security, many devices rely on weak personal identification numbers (PINs) rather than robust passwords or passphrases, making them susceptible to attacks. |
One such threat is Bluesnarfing, a cyberattack where hackers exploit a Bluetooth connection to steal sensitive information or infect a device. |
To mitigate the risks of Bluesnarfing, CISA recommends the following five tips: |
Disable Bluetooth when you are not using it. Use Bluetooth in "hidden" mode. Be careful where you use Bluetooth. Avoid public wireless “hotspots” whenever possible. Be aware of your environment when pairing devices or operating in discoverable mode. Evaluate your security settings. Take advantage of security options available on your devices.
For additional safety, the National Security Agency provided a graphic that explains Mobile Device Best Practices. By adopting these proactive measures, you can enjoy the convenience of Bluetooth technology while safeguarding your personal and professional data during the holiday season and beyond. |
