United Way by the Numbers:

Houston Food Bank

What is the Houston Food Bank? The Houston Food Bank is dedicated to alleviating hunger and improving lives by distributing nutritious food and essentials to those in need across 18 counties in southeast Texas. Established in 1982, Houston Food Bank is the largest food bank in the nation, providing food assistance, nutrition education, job training, and health management services to help families achieve long-term stability through a network of 1,600 community partners. Their efforts not only address immediate food insecurity but also promote sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty.

  • Provides access to over 140 million nutritious meals annually

  • Serves more than 1 million food-insecure individuals

  • Distributes 44% in fresh produce out of total output

  • Facilitates 18 million meals through SNAP application assistance

  • Engages over 90,000 volunteers each year

Although the Houston Food Bank is not a United Way of Greater Houston agency partner, their mission to better lives through access to food is closely related to our work promoting financial stability in Greater Houston.

Through its comprehensive programs and community partnerships, the Houston Food Bank continues to make a profound impact on the fight against hunger and poverty in southeast Texas.

United Way Spotlight

Women’s Initiative Event Highlights!

In mid-May, twenty amazing ADT members of the Women's Initiative traveled to beautiful Asheville, NC for a few days of fun, fellowship, and service.  One of the highlights was a morning of volunteering with Hearts with Hands, a disaster-relief organization that supports Asheville with Hurricane Helene recovery but also supports disaster relief efforts across the country and internationally. Our WI members spent a productive morning sorting donations and assembling toiletry kits.

It will take many years for Asheville to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Helene and we were pleased to do our small part to support them.  In addition to our service activity, we supported the local economy by touring the Biltmore estate, enjoying several delicious meals, and checking out local shops and galleries.

Huge thanks to our trip organizing committee: Cassandra McZeal, Paige Martin, Decie Autin, Ann Deaton, Lauren Ivers, Dr. Angel Harris, and Amanda McMillian.

Annual self-funded trips like this are one of the perks of being an Alexis de Tocqueville Society member and are a fantastic way to forge long-lasting friendships. We'd love to have you join us at the next one!
