United Way of Greater Houston Receives $3 Million Grant from Houston Endowment to Support Nonprofits Pursuing Government Funding
HOUSTON, TX (Oct. 23, 2024) – United Way of Greater Houston has been awarded a $3 million investment from Houston Endowment to help area nonprofits enhance the knowledge and skills needed to secure and manage local, state and federal public grants. This grant allows United Way of Greater Houston to provide services that include workshops, customized training modules and participation in a unique learning cohort designed to grow an organization’s ability to source, acquire and manage public funds. Nonprofits selected to participate in the cohort will also have access to small grants enabling them to access consulting support in various fields. A portion of the funds will be used to develop a government grant portal that connects nonprofits with relevant tools, resources and available grant opportunities.
This new program will be managed by United Way of Greater Houston’s Nonprofit Connection as part of a portfolio of services designed to reinforce the ability of nonprofit organizations to achieve their mission and increase their impact through sound management, strong governance and measurable results.
“Diverse sources of revenue, including effective government grant programs, can be transformative for nonprofits, enabling them to scale their services and tackle complex community needs,” said Amanda McMillian, president and CEO, United Way of Greater Houston. “Houston Endowment has been a tremendous advocate for strengthening our nonprofit community through capacity building efforts like this, and we are grateful for their continued support.”
For more than 30 years, United Way of Greater Houston’s Nonprofit Connection (NPC) has helped area nonprofits advance their mission and impact by offering the tools, training and resources focused on developing talented leaders; creating dynamic and engaged boards; recruiting and retaining capable staff and volunteers; and managing and operating effectively and efficiently. Well-known NPC initiatives include Project Blueprint, which prepares aspiring leaders of color for leadership roles on nonprofit and public sector boards and committees, and the CenterPoint Energy Emerging Leaders Institute, which helps build the next generation of ethnically diverse leaders in Houston’s nonprofit sector.
“Funding from government grants can have a significant impact on a nonprofit’s ability to grow their services, but the grant application process can be complex, requiring technical expertise that many organizations don’t have in-house,” said Ann B. Stern, president and CEO, Houston Endowment. “With this investment, United Way of Greater Houston will help area nonprofits not only identify potential grant opportunities, but also strengthen their ability to seek and manage this important source of funding.”
United Way anticipates launching this program in January 2025.
