Resources for Recovery

More than 250 Houston-area case managers gathered at the United Way Center on June 23 to learn about the resources available to victims of Hurricane Ike from more than 50 organizations. The Hurricane Ike Resource Fair provided information on programs, services and other resources to help case managers support the thousands of families still struggling to recover from the storm.

Lives You've Changed

Frank, a civilian contractor for the army, and his wife have a two year old daughter. The family rented a home in Houston and was stable—until Hurricane Ike hit. A tree crushed the roof of their home, causing severe damage to the house. The family was forced to move. Luckily, United Way was there to help.

Most of the city was without electricity, so Frank moved his family into an apartment and purchased a generator to power it. As soon as the family settled into their new place, Frank lost his job. The bills started to pile up, and before Frank received his first unemployment assistance check, he got an eviction notice.

Frank and his family turned to United Way for help. Through a United Way family and social services program, Frank was connected with financial planning information and rental assistance. His family was also able to get help with food, clothing and other basic needs.

Thanks to United Way, Frank and his family were able to start over after Hurricane Ike. We are committed to helping those facing big obstacles, move forward and rebuild.

Hurricane Season is Here

It is June in Houston and that means the beginning of hurricane season. Now is the time to prepare for the kind of unexpected weather that can crop up at a moment's notice. Once a storm barrels its way into the Gulf of Mexico, it may be too late to organize important information and gather critical supplies.

Our 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE is the information resource before, during and after a disaster. We connect people in need with critical services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Read more...
