Iris's Story - The Right Call
 With diabetes and a disability, Iris needs help handling her daily life. Luckily, United Way was there for her. Diabetes requires her to maintain a special diet and her disability prevents Iris from being able to travel to get food and other basics on her own. Iris lives with her nephew Luis, who attends college in another city during the week, but comes home on the weekends to help care for his aunt. One weekend, school functions prevented Luis from being able to come home as planned. For Iris, that meant not being able to get much-needed groceries. When Iris called the 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE, she had not eaten in several days. Immediately, a 2-1-1 call specialist connected Iris with the help she needed. The call specialist arranged for food to be delivered to Iris that very day. The call specialist also arranged case management for Iris so she has a support network to call on before she gets to the crisis stage. For Iris, one call to 2-1-1 made all of the difference. Answering an average of 2,000 calls per day, seven days a week, 2-1-1 call specialists do something about it for our community every day.
